NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: WELLSBORO EARNS CROSSOVER WIN AGAINST WILLIAMSON (2025-01-13)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The host Lady Hornets used a late, 11-2 run to open up a tie game with Williamson and held the Lady Warriors off for a 51-47 win in an NTL crossover match-up here Monday night.
After Williamson’s Olivia Meisner hit a jumper to tie the game at 37-all with a minute left in the third quarter, Wellsboro scored the period’s final 4 points on jump shots from Paige Logsdon and Rylee Coolidge and opened the fourth quarter with a Teagan Novinger bucket to take a 43-37 lead.
A Kenna Thomas putback for Williamson was answered by 5 straight points for Wellsboro and the Lady Hornets led 48-39 with less than five minutes remaining as Ady Frantz connected from the baseline to culminate the 11-2 run.
The Hornets needed just a Chloe Brandenburg 3-pointer the rest of the way as they held Williamson to a pair of Thomas buckets, an Avery Vinsek long 2 and free throws from Vinsek and Meisner to secure the 51-47 win.
Brandenburg led Wellsboro with 19 points .. including five 3-pointers .. while Logson added 14 points and Novinger had 13. Frantz chipped in with 3 points and Coolidge rounded out the Hornets’ scoring with 2 points.
Williamson had taken a one-point lead after the first quarter at 10-9 as Maddy Jones scored 4 early points for the Warriors, but Wellsboro answered with a 14-10 second frame .. with Brandenburg hitting a pair of threes and Logsdon and Novinger adding 4 points each .. giving the Hornets a 23-20 lead at the break.
Brandenburg’s second three of the quarter came as the clock ran out on the first half and was from well beyond the three-point line.
“Chloe’s long, NBA three to end the first half set the tone for the second half,” said Wellsboro Head Coach Maureen Poirier following the win. “The girls came out in the second half ready to play.”
A back-and-forth third quarter led to the 37-all tie and Wellsboro’s run into the final frame.
Thomas finished with 15 points to lead Williamson, with Meisner adding 13 points, Jones and Aubrey Wells with 6 points each, Bailey Snyder with 4 points and Vinsek chipping in with 3 points in the loss.
The Hornets made 2-of-6 free throws in the game while Williamson was 4-for-8.
“Paige (Logsdon) and Teagan (Novinger) did a great job controlling the boards and finishing underneath,” said Poirier, “The girls moved the ball well and found the open girl tonight .. if this team continues to work hard, we’ll get a signature win soon.”
The win snaps a four-game losing skid for the Hornets, who are now 4-5 on the season. They’re scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at Troy.
Williamson, now 4-7 on the year after their third straight loss, is set to host Canton on Wednesday.
