HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: BRYCE PEQUIGNOT CLAIMS DISTRICT IV TITLE FOR NORTH PENN-LIBERTY (2025-02-22)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWILLIAMSPORT — Sophomore Bryce Pequignot won the 114-pound title to lead North Penn-Liberty to a strong showing at the District IV Championships as he’ll be joined at next week’s Northeast Regional Championships by three Mountie teammates.
After cruising to a tech fall-win Friday night in the quarterfinals, Pequignot pinned Wyalusing’s Isaiah Harvey in 1:31 in the semifinals to reach the championship match. There, he dominated Warrior Run freshman Chase Wirnsberger and claimed the gold with an 8-0 decision.
Pequignot ran his season record to 33-5 and will enter Regionals as the North Section and District IV 2A champ.
Joining Pequignot at Regionals will be senior brother Brayden Pequignot, the 4th-place finisher at 127 pounds, as well as senior cousin Riley Oakes at 152 pounds and freshman 107-pounder Bodhi Nickerson, who each took 7th place to keep their postseasons going.
Brayden Pequignot was knocked into the consolation bracket Friday night and won three straight matches to reach the 3rd/4th place match .. pinning Williamson’s Noah Robinson in 2:06, getting a 6-4 decision over Towanda’s Tanner Vanderpool and beating Montgomery’s Carden Wagner 12-9.
The elder Pequignot fell in the consolation final by fall to Mifflinburg’s Bradley Wagner, who had also beat him Friday night to drop him into the consolations. He’ll take a 27-9 record into next week’s Regional Championship.
After being dropped into the loser’s bracket Friday night, Oakes rebounded Saturday and won his first match by pinning Muncy’s Paxton Derr in 1:58. He then lost 4-1 to Hughesville’s Keagan Smith before punching his ticket to advance with a 7-3 win over Midd-West’s Evan Maneval in the 7th/8th place match.
Nickerson also won his first match Saturday after getting dropped into the consolation bracket on Friday night, pinning Mount Carmel’s Brayden Mirarck. An 8-0 loss to NEB’s Mason Alexander put Nickerson in the 7th/8th place bout and he beat Hughesville’s Ethan Wodrig 5-1.
The Mounties’ two remaining District qualifiers both fell in their first match Saturday after being dropped into the loser’s bracket Friday night.
Junior Charles Aumick (121) finished his season with a 12-11 record after being pinned in his final match, while senior Braden Route lost 7-0 Saturday morning and finishes his final season with a 14-19 record.
The Northeast Regionals will again take place at Williamsport High School next weekend. Check back here for a preview after brackets have been announced.
