HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: BRYCE PEQUIGNOT IS REGIONAL CHAMPION .. BRAYDEN PEQUIGNOT ALSO QUALIFIES FOR STATES (2025-03-01)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWILLIAMSPORT — North Penn-Liberty’s Bryce Pequignot avenged an early season loss to claim the Northeast Region 114-pound title here Saturday, as brother Brayden Pequignot also qualifies for States with a 4th-place finish.
Bryce Pequignot continued his phenomenal sophomore postseason run, which also includes a sectional and district title, with a 5-0 win over 30-win Isaiah Harvey from Wyalusing, a tech fall of 40-win Liam Seeley from Montgomery and a 9-4 win over C.J. Caines, who had handed Pequignot a 19-3 loss in the season-opening DKI Tournament in Bloomsburg.
With his 15th straight win, Pequignot will take a 36-5 record to Hershey for his second appearance at the State Championships.
Senior Brayden Pequignot will join younger brother Bryce at States, also for the second time, having placed 4th at 127 pounds.
After a pair of Day 1 wins .. a fall in 3:31 over Towanda’s Tanner Vanderpool and an 8-0 major decision over Dallas’ Sidney O’Donnell .. Pequignot fell 7-1 to two-time State medal winner Colton Wade from Sullivan County in the semifinals.
A 6-2 win over District 2 champ Connor Novakowski from Wyoming Area put Pequignot in the consolation finals, where he fell to Montoursville’s David Kennedy to claim his second straight 4th-place Regional finish and State berth. The senior will take a 30-11 season record and 111 career wins to Hershey.
After opening his first Regional by beating defending champion Manny Stoltzfus from Montgomery, freshman Bodhi Nickerson was dropped into the consolation bracket with a loss to eventual 107-pound champ Nathan Schuman from Honesdale.
Nickerson won his blood round match 4-0 Saturday morning, but was eliminated from the championships with a loss to State qualifier Rowan Humphrey from Southern Columbia. He finishes his freshman campaign with a mark of 31-13.
Riley Oakes dropped into the consolation bracket in a tough 152-pound class Friday night and was eliminated Saturday morning after falling to Benton’s Dylan Brokenshire. The senior finishes his final season for the Mounties with a 36-12 mark and an impressive 95 career wins.
Wrestling in Hershey starts on Thursday with AA preliminary and first round bouts to begin at 9 a.m. Tickets can be purchased for all or individual sessions HERE.
