HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: PHENOMENAL FRESHMAN SEASON COMES TO AN END FOR WILIAMSON'S ZANDER WILSON (2025-03-07)

Northern Tier WEST Sports Report
HERSHEY — Williamson’s Zander Wilson was dropped into the State Championship consolation bracket after a quarterfinal loss Friday morning and was eliminated Saturday after falling 10-3 in his final bout.

Wilson reached the 107-pound quarters after his 10-1 major decision win on Thursday evening.

Wilson started off strong against quarterfinal opponent Keegan Bassett (44-5) from Bishop McCort, who not only hasn’t lost a match since before the New Year, the freshman also hasn’t given up a takedown since the Powerade Tournament at the end of December.

After giving up a quick takedown, Wilson escaped and then took a 4-3 lead with a nice double leg with less than 30 seconds gone in the first period. Bassett took control and went on to earn a 23-5 tech fall with 7 seconds left in the second period.

In the blood round, where the winner is guaranteed of a top-8 finish and a State medal, Wilson faced Trinity freshman Camron Smith (41-8). Wilson took a 3-0 lead into the third period, but Smith tied it up with a takedown against the arena wall 30 seconds into the third and rode out time to force sudden victory. A takedown and four back points gave Smith the 10-3 win and eliminated Wilson from the Championships.

Wilson finishes a phenomenal freshman campaign with a 43-3 record, a North Section and a District IV title.

Look for a season recap for Williamson soon.
