NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY HAPPY WITH EFFORT, PLAYOFF BERTH IN '24-'25 (2025-03-14)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWESTFIELD, PA — A late-season lull didn’t prevent the Cowanesque Valley girls basketball team from making the District 4 playoffs, or take away from a special season for the Lady Indians.
CV sat at .500 with their 6-6 mark in mid-January before a 2-7 stretch run left them at 8-13, good enough for the No. 6 seed in the 8-team District 4 Class 2A playoffs. They’d fall 51-35 to No. 3 seed Northwest Area, but first year Head Coach Bree Vargeson doesn’t think the Lady Indians’ final record diminishes their season.
“We had a great season,” says Vargeson, “I’m super proud of these girls who worked hard every day at practice and in school. When they stepped on the court they played 110% all the time.”
The Lady Indians went 7-8 in the NTL, getting wins over large school teams Athens (15-8) and Wellsboro (6-15) and small school foes North Penn-Mansfield (8-14), Williamson (7-15), North Penn-Liberty (9-14) and Sayre (2-20) twice. They earned their lone non-league win of the season against Northern Potter.
Seniors Ella Churchill (13 ppg) and Ashley Woodring (12.5 ppg) led Cowanesque Valley in scoring, while Woodring averaged a double-double with 12.1 rebounds per game and added 3 steals per outing. Churchill grabbed 6.4 boards and 2 steals per game and hit 16 3-pointers on the year.
Senior Lily Vargeson ran the point for CV and averaged 3.9 points, 2 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while classmate Cassidy Andreason was in the Indians’ starting five and senior Jesse Quick came off the bench. CV’s remaining starter was junior Starr Ordway, who averaged 6.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game and led the Lady Indians with 18 threes on the season.
“These girls played as a team and they truly love each other and supported each other every night,” says Vargeson, “and they each brought different aspects to the game. Ashley brought toughness .. Ella had offensive drive .. Lily was defensively driven and dished to her teammates .. Cassidy was a great role player and played hard .. Jesse was a spark off the bench and had great team spirit .. and Starr was willing to play any position and gave it her all.”
“The seniors will truly be missed,” Vargeson continued, “Someone said to me .. if State Championships could be won from heart and hustle, these girls would bring home a championship.”
