HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: LATE-INNING COLLAPSE DOOMS HORNETS IN LOSS TO HUGHESVILLE (2025-03-22)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWELLSBORO — Marek Mascho hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie Wellsboro’s game up with the visiting Spartans Saturday, but Hughesville scored 15 unanswered runs in the final two frames to beat the Hornets, 17-2.
Hughesville took an early, 2-0 lead in the first inning before Wellsboro answered with a run in the bottom half to make it 2-1. After three and a half scoreless innings, Mascho delivered the game-tying bomb, but Hughesville responded with a seven-run sixth inning and added eight in the seventh to pull away.
Mascho also had a double in the game and had an RBI and a run scored while Gabe Sprouse had two base hits, Alec Magli had a hit, Cam Tennis had an RBI and Griffin Morral scored a run.
Sprouse started on the mound and went four innings, giving up two unearned runs on a hit with five walks and four strikeouts. Mascho took the loss, going one and two-third innings and allowing seven runs (2 earned) on seven hits with no walks or K’s.
Wellsboro (0-3) will look for their first win on Tuesday when they host Athens.
