HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: WELLSBORO FALLS IN NINE INNINGS TO JERSEY SHORE (2025-03-29)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The Hornets came back twice to extend their game with non-league Jersey Shore here Saturday, but couldn’t answer the Bulldogs’ game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning and fell, 10-9.
After Wellsboro took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Jersey Shore scored the next seven runs and led 7-3 after five and a half innings of play. The Hornets cut the Bulldog lead to one in the bottom half of the fifth when Marek Mascho and Coen Tennis each drew walks, Cameron Owlett scored them both with a single and then crossed home on a Jersey Shore error off Max Mascho’s bat to make it 7-6.
After a scoreless sixth and top of the seventh, Wellsboro’s Ryder Bowen reached base on an error and advanced on an Owlett sacrifice bunt. Gabe Cuneo drove a ball to centerfield that was mishandled by Jersey Shore and plated Bowen to send the game into extra innings.
The Bulldogs went back on top in the eighth inning with a pair of runs, but Wellsboro answered once again. Alec Magli doubled and Marek Mascho reached base on an error, followed by a Coen Tennis single that plated both runners and sent the game to the ninth inning tied at nine.
Jersey Shore produced a run in the top half and shut the Hornets down with three strikeouts in their last chance, earning the 10-9, extra-inning win.
Tennis finished with two base hits, three RBI and a run scored, while Owlett had a hit, a run scored and two RBI and Cuneo had a hit a drove in two runs. Marek Mascho, Magli and Gabe Sprouse each had a double in the game, with Mascho scoring three runs, Magli scoring two and Sprouse once and Bowen scored a run.
Four Hornets took the mound in the game, with Dylan Copp throwing two innings and allowing three runs (2 earned) on three hits and four walks, Max Mascho going two and two-third innings and giving up four earned runs on four hits and six walks, Cuneo tossing two and two-thirds innings and allowing a pair of unearned runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout and Marek Mascho going an inning and two-thirds and allowing an unearned run on two hits and two walks with a K.
Now 1-5 on the season with the loss, the Hornets are next scheduled to visit Wyalusing, on Tuesday.
