NTL BASEBALL: TIGERS COME BACK TO FORCE EXTRA INNINGS IN SUSPENDED GAME WITH CV (2025-04-03)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportMANSFIELD — North Penn-Mansfield erased an 8-run deficit to force extra innings with Cowanesque Valley here Thursday, before the 11-11 game was suspended due to darkness after the eighth inning.
CV collected 16 hits on the night, and used a double by Ayren Morgan, a single by Logan Stickler, a walk by Dave Hess and a sac fly from Lucas Hamilton to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Tigers answered in the bottom half as Cooper Shaw reached base on a dropped third strike and Easton Pequignot delivered a home run to cut the Indians’ lead to 3-2 after an inning of play.
After a scoreless second inning, CV got singles from Morgan and Hamilton and a three-run home run from Stickler to go up 6-2 in the third.
Stickler, who started the game on the mound for CV, shut the Tigers down in the bottom of the third and the fourth, and the Indians used base hits in the fourth from Dave Hess, Danny Smith and Stickler, a double by Hamilton and a sacrifice from Morgan to plate three more runs to make it 9-2. Morgan singled in the top of the fifth and Hamilton drove him in to put the Indians up 10-2 after four and a half.
Mansfield chipped away in the bottom of the fifth, getting singles from Noah Musser and Alex Davis and hits from Shaw and Pequignot to score them and make it 10-4 as they headed to the sixth inning.
Davis, who took the mound in the fifth inning, shut CV down and Mansfield got a leadoff single by Cameron Caldwell to start the bottom of the sixth. After Musser walked, Davis cleared the bases with a single to make it 10-6 with no outs. After a groundout by Andy Hermansen and a wild pitch got Davis to third, he’d come home on a passed ball to make it 10-7.
Shaw followed with a walk, and Pequignot homered for the second time in the game, pulling the Tigers to within a run at 10-9.
Morgan and Hamilton delivered singles once again in the seventh to score CV’s final run and Mansfield was down 11-9 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Jason Harer walked and Caldwell reached base on a CV error before Musser came through with a hit that plated both base runners and tied the game at 11-all.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the game was suspended due to darkness still tied at 11.
The teams combined for 27 base hits in the game .. with six going for extra bases.
Cowanesque had 16 hits, as Morgan 4 R, 2 RBI) and Hamilton (2 R, 2 RBI) had four apiece, Stickler (3 R, 3 RBI) had three, Smith (RBI) had two and Hess (2 R), Levi Stahli and Churchill (RBI) had one each.
Pequignot had three hits (2 HR, 2 R, 5 RBI) for North Penn-Mansfield while Musser (2 R, 2 RBI) and Davis (2 R, 2 RBI) had two hits each and Hermansen, Shaw (2 R, RBI), Liam Shaut and Caldwell (2 R) had a hit each.
Hermansen started on the mound for the Tigers and went one inning, allowing three runs (2 earned) on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Caldwell pitched two innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts, Shaw went an inning and allowed three earned runs on four base hits and a walk with one K and Davis went four innings and surrendered two earned runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Stickler went five innings and allowed five earned runs on eight base hits and two walks with seven K’s for CV, while Hess recorded one out and gave up four earned runs on two hits and two walks, Smith went two-thirds of an inning and gave up two runs (1 earned) with a walk and Morgan finished the final two innings and gave up a hit and two walks with one strikeout.
CV and North Penn-Mansfield aren’t scheduled to play again .. a decision on whether the game will be completed is to be determined.
CV is scheduled to host Port Allegany on Saturday, while NP-Mansfield is scheduled to host Canton on Tuesday.
