NTL BOYS SOCCER: WELLSBORO ROLLS PAST TOWANDA (2021-09-09)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The defending NTL champion Hornets were never truly pushed in their game with Towanda Thursday, as Jack Poirier scored a hat trick and Wellsboro outshot the Black Knights 30-2 while cruising to a 6-0 win.
Matt Richards put Wellsboro on the board just 2:09 into the contest, scoring on an Ethan Barlett assist. Richards added another score in the second half, giving the senior five goals over the last two games as he recorded a hat trick in the Hornets 7-2 win over Williamson Tuesday.
Poirier, who assisted on Richards’ second goal, scored the first of his three with 7:08 gone in the first half on a loft from Dustin Benedict that Poirier headed past Towanda’s keeper. The Hornets took the 2-0 lead into the break.
With 6:22 gone in the second, Poirier crashed the net after a Richards’ saved shot on goal, knocking the rebound into the net for a 3-0 lead. Six-plus minutes later, Richards took a cross from Poirier for his second goal and a 4-0 Wellsboro lead.
Owen Richardson got in on the scoring fury with just under 14 minutes remaining in the game, scoring from near midfield, and Poirier completed Wellsboro’s onslaught off an assist by Richards with :32 remaining.
Wellsboro keeper Aiden Gehman saved both shots made against him in goal.
In addition to the 30-2 shots-on-goal advantage, the Hornets had six corner kicks to the Black Knights one.
Wellsboro, now 2-0 in the NTL and 2-1 overall, will return to action Saturday when they host non-league opponent Loyalsock at 5:30 p.m.
