SHIPPENSBURG — Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich pushed her way into the 100 and 200 finals at the PIAA Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Hoprich was fifth overall in the Class AA 100 preliminaries in 12.21, with Pine Grove’s Viktorya Luckenbach running an 11.95 in qualifying.

In the 200 she was fourth in 25.38, as Luckenbach also had the fastest time in 24.89.

“I was just running so that I could get into the finals,” explained Hoprich. “Not using too much of my energy, just enough to get first in my heat.”

Hoprich won her heat in both events.

“It’s good confidence,” she said about winning her heats. “I’m excited to go into the finals.”

It was a busy day for the sophomore as she also had the 4x100. She teamed with Sophia Yoder, Luna Moyer, and Kate Bryant to take 27th out of 24 teams in 51.44.

By the time she got to the 200 Hoprich could feel it a little bit.

“That was definitely a lot, but most of these girls are running both, too,” she said. “That girl was ahead of me and I knew I had to kick it in.”

The day wasn’t ideal for sprints with a chilly, windy rain in the morning that felt more like early April than late May.

Saturday looks marginally better, but Hoprich is excited regardless.

“I’m super pumped for tomorrow for the 100 and 200,” said Hoprich.

Lauren Kosek took 11th in the Class AA girls’ 1600 with a time of 5:09.66, a little over four seconds off the podium.

She’ll get another shot Saturday morning in the 3200.
