NTL GIRLS SOCCER: WELLSBORO TOPS ATHENS IN SEASON OPENER (2025-08-26)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportATHENS — The Wellsboro girls soccer team beat Athens 2-0 on Tuesday for their first win over the Lady Wildcats in the last 14 seasons and to start the year 1-0.
Haylie Smith scored at the 25:04 mark of the first half off an assist from Kate Bryant and Bryant scored off a corner kick with just over eight minutes left in the game to provide the final.
Athens outshot Wellsboro 11-8 and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks while Hornet keeper Jadyn Dunlap recorded the clean sheet with 11 saves.
“I’m so proud of the way our girls played tonight,” said first year Head Coach Michael Reese, “The defense was outstanding from start to finish and the energy never dropped. This was a complete team win, and one that’s been a long time coming.”
Wellsboro (1-0) is scheduled to return to action Thursday when they host North Penn-Mansfield.
