NTL FOOTBALL: HORNETS GET BACK TO .500 WITH MERCY RULE WIN OVER CANTON (2025-10-10)

WELLSBORO — Wellsboro scored on five of their six first half possessions and on two of Canton’s as the Hornets routed the visiting Warriors 49-7 here Friday night.

In addition to their five TDs, the Hornets picked off four Canton passes in the first half .. two by Marek Mascho and two by Kody Enck, who returned both of his picks for scores and finished with 102 interception return yards, good for 2nd all-time for Wellsboro.

Wellsboro took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in 11 plays, capped by a 6-yard TD run by QB Griffin Morral. The extra point kick was short and the Hornets led 6-0 less than five minutes into the game.

After forcing a Canton punt, Wellsboro went right back to work and Dylan Copp would score from three yards out. Mascho punched in the 2-point conversion attempt and Wellsboro went up 14-0 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Hornets added their third TD of the opening frame with two minutes left as Morral found Enck for a 26-yard TD pass. Finn Matthews’ good XP try gave Wellsboro a 21-0 lead.

Wellsboro racked up nearly 300 yards of offense .. 230 on the ground, led by Marek Mascho’s 117 yards and a score on 13 carries ,, while Morral ran for 75 yards and two scores and threw for 47 yards and another touchdown. Dylan Copp added a rushing TD and 21 yards on five carries.

The Hornets scored the remainder of their points in the second quarter, starting with Enck’s two pick-sixes that covered 61 and 41 yards and came at the 11:46 mark of the quarter and just over a minute later. Matthews hit both extra point kicks and Wellsboro led 35-0.

After again forcing a Canton punt, the Hornets completed a 4-play, 48-yard drive with a Marek Mascho 22-yard TD run. Matthews made it 42-0 with 6:44 left before the halftime break.

Canton would avoid the shutout with a 22-yard TD pass from Owen Moore to Rylan Wesneski with five minutes left in the quarter. Alexis McRoberts hit the PAT to cut the Wellsboro lead to 42-7.

With just over a minute left in the first half of play, the Hornets completed the scoring for the night on a 22-yard TD run by Morral. Matthews hit his fifth extra point kick and Wellsboro had their 49-7 lead that would become the final.

The Hornets collected 15 first downs in the win while holding Canton to eight, and limited the Warriors to just 17 yards rushing. The Warriors did find some success through the air, completing 9-of-17 passing attempts for 161 yards and their lone score.

Levi Champaign led the Hornet ‘D’ with six tackles while Copp and Reed Richardson had four stops each. Along with Mascho and Enck’s two picks each, Mason Abplanalp had an interception while Gavin Carson and Hayden Stevens each had a sack. 

Wellsboro evens their season record at 4-4 with the win. They’ll host Northwest Area next Friday night.
