Northern Tier West Sports Report
HERSHEY — Four Tioga County wrestlers will be competing at the PIAA State Wrestling Championships later this week, as Williamson’s Luke Sottolano and Zander Wilson and North Penn-Liberty’s Bryce Pequignot and Bodhi Nickerson all head to Hershey.

Sottolano won Sectional, District and Regional titles at 285 pounds and takes a 42-2 season record into his second appearance at States.

The senior will face the winner between Glendale senior Daniel Williams (44-4), the South West 4th-place finisher, and Biglerville sophomore Ryan Bungard (24-8), who placed 5th in the South East regional.

While never having faced either, Sottolano has a common opponent with Williams in Corry’s Owen Nickerson, who Sottolano beat 1-0 and Williams beat 2-1, both earlier this season.

Bungard has lost twice to Big Spring sophomore state qualifier Blake Gutshell twice this season, while Sottolano faced Gutshell at States last season, falling 1-0.

With a win in his round-of-16 match, Sottolano would face the winner between Cathedral Prep senior Max Spaulding (36-9), the North West 3rd-place winner, and Fairfield junior Caleb Tyler (32-3), the South East runner-up.
North Section, District IV and North East Regional 114-pound champion Wilson, a sophomore, brings a 38-4 mark into his second State appearance. He’ll wrestle the winner between Cathedral Prep sophomore Mason Cregor (30-13), the North West 4th-place finisher, and Everett sophomore Tucker Smith (35-10), who took 5th in the South West Regional.

Wilson has a common opponent with Cregor in Warren’s Tanner Stuart, who Wilson has beaten twice and Cregor fell to 1-0.

Smith pinned NEB’s Mason Alexander earlier this season while Wilson is 2-1 against Alexander, all three matches having occurred last season.

With a win, Wilson would meet the winner between Highlands senior Javeon Chambers (39-8), the South West 3rd-place finisher, and Halifax junior Izaya Schickley (39-3), the South East runner-up.
Pequignot won the 121-pound North Section title and was the runner-up at both Districts and Regionals, compiling a 33-5 season record. The junior enters his third State Championship with a 102-20 career record and will face South West 3rd-place finisher Dakota Santamaria, a senior from Tussey Mountain.

The two met at this season’s Mid-Winter Mayhem where Santamaria won with a 3rd-period fall.

With a win in his preliminary bout, Pequignot would likely meet top-seeded Sam Wolford (49-3) a senior from Northern Lebanon.
Sophomore Nickerson is 28-10 this season and makes his first appearance at States after winning the 107-pound title at Sectionals, placing 2nd at Districts and taking 4th at Regionals.

He’ll face Elizabeth Forward sophomore Warren Woleslagle (36-9), the South West 5th-place finisher who Nickerson major decisioned 9-1 at the Mid-Winter Mayhem this year.

With a win, Nickerson would face Trinity freshman Arav Pandey (36-3), the South East Regional champ.
Wrestling begins Thursday morning at 9 a.m. with AA preliminaries and first round bouts. The first round of consolation matches are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Thursday and the quarterfinal and second round of AA consolation bouts will start at 8 a.m. on Friday.
