NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: MOUNTIES FALL IN FIRST ROUND STATE PLAYOFF GAME TO YORK COUNTRY DAY (March 6, 2026)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
YORK — North Penn-Liberty successfully slowed down fast-paced York Country Day in the first half of the Mounties’ first round Class A State playoff game here Friday night, but the Greyhounds used a 20-3 run to end the third quarter to pull away for a 68-41 win.

“Our strategy was to slow the game down as much as possible,” said NPL Head Coach Bear Mattison following the loss, “We did that in the first half. But their extended zone press really got to us in the 3rd quarter and they got some easy baskets. We tried to pick the pace up a bit after that and lost focus on slowing the game down strategy.”

The Mounties matched YCD shot-for-shot to start the game and Luke Kreger’s finish on a coast-to-coast drive tied the game at 9-all with 3:15 left in the first quarter. The Greyhounds closed the frame with a 5-2 run to take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.

Liberty again kept pace with York and Landon Mattern’s five points and four from Conner Lewis helped the Mounties go into the halftime break down just four points at 28-24.

Evan McTish scored seven third quarter points and the Mounties cut YCD’s lead to 33-30 with five and a half minutes left in the third on Lewis’ lay-in off a nice dish from Brody Grinnell, but the Greyhounds raced to a 20-3 run to end the frame and went up 53-33 as they went to the fourth.

A 15-8 final frame in favor of the host Greyhounds provided the final.

Mattern finished with 12 points to lead the Mounties’ scoring attack, while McTish had 11 points and added eight rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot.

Lewis had seven points, seven boards, four assists and two steals, Kreger had five points and three assists, Grinnell had four points and five assists and Sudan banner chipped in with two points for the Mounties in their final game of the season.

“I thought we played really well tonight,” said Mattison, “Our goal was to be competitive and we achieved that. Overall, I am very happy with how everyone played.”

The Mounties finish the 2025-’26 season with a 17-11 record.
