NTL SOFTBALL: WELLSBORO WINS WALK-OFF THRILLER OVER TROY (April 8, 2026)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The Lady Hornets went back-and-forth against Troy on Wednesday and took advantage of the Trojans’ eighth error of the game to pull out a 9-8, walk-off win.
After Troy scrambled for a two-out run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 8-all, Wellsboro got a leadoff walk by Mazie Johnson to start the bottom half. Harleigh Cleveland laid down a sacrifice bunt and the Trojans’ first baseman fielded the ball and threw it away, allowing Johnson to come around and score the winning run.
Wellsboro ace Ady Frantz went the distance to earn the win, allowing just three base hits to give up eight runs (4 earned) and walking seven while striking out 14 Troy batters.
The Hornets opened the game’s scoring in the first inning as Haylie Smith reached base on an error and would score on a Gena Fleming single to give Wellsboro a 1-0 lead.
Troy got two runs in the second inning and Wellsboro answered with a three-run bottom half, as Johnson reached on an error, Smith walked, Rylee Coolidge singled to score them both and Frantz doubled to bring Coolidge home for a 4-2 Hornet lead.
The Trojans took the lead in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs before Wellsboro tied it up at 5-all in the bottom of the fourth when Coolidge singled and would score on a Troy error off the bat of Gena Fleming.
Delaney Morral singled in the fifth and was moved up on a Kaylee Frazier sac bunt before scoring on a sac fly from Johnson to give Wellsboro a 6-5 lead. Troy plated a pair of runs in the sixth to go up 7-6 and the Hornets answered when Smith reached on an error and scored when Frantz singled, who came home on a Fleming single to put the Hornets back up, 8-7, leading to the eventful final frame.
Morral finished with three base hits in the win for Wellsboro and added a run scored, while Frantz had two hits, two RBI and a run scored, Coolidge had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored and Fleming had two hits and two RBI.
Frazier had a base hit, Johnson had an RBI and scored twice and Smith scored three runs.
Wellsboro, now 3-3 on the season with their second straight win, is scheduled to return to action on Thursday when they visit Sayre.
