NTL BASEBALL: WELLSBORO EDGES NORTH PENN-MANSFIELD 8-7 (April 16, 2026)

WELLSBORO — The Hornets overcame a big third inning by North Penn-Mansfield and rallied late to beat the Tigers 8-7 in NTL-I baseball play here Thursday.

Wellsboro took an early lead, using three walks .. by Griffin Morral, Marek and Max Mascho .. a single by Coen Tennis and a sacrifice by Cameron Owlett to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Back-to-back doubles in the second inning from Morral and Gabe Cuneo put the Hornets up 4-0 before the Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the third and plated seven runs.

Brock Deitrick walked, Andy Hermansen doubled and Collin Oakes walked to load the bases for NPM. A strikeout was followed by Ryder Breon reaching base on an error that scored both Dietrick and Hermansen and Oakes would come home on a wild pitch to batter Isaac Sparks, who would also walk. 

Noah Musser singled Breon home, Kam House sacrificed Sparks in and Peyton Greene delivered a single to score Musser before Hermansen connected on his second double of the inning, scoring Greene and putting the Tigers up 7-4.

After a scoreless fourth and top of the fifth, Wellsboro cut the lead to one at 7-6 when Marek Mascho doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, Max Mascho singled him home and Gage Baltzley singled to drive in Max.

Still down 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Wellsboro got a leadoff walk by Reed Richardson and Morral tied the game up when he delivered a single to score Richardson. 

Morral would get caught stealing second and a pop-out left Wellsboro with two outs and no one on base. But three straight errors by North Penn-Mansfield .. off the bats of Marek Mascho, Tennis and Max Mascho .. would allow Marek to score and give the Hornets an 8-7 lead.

Reliever Syler Pietrzyk got a leadoff fly-out, gave up a single to Sparks and got NPM to ground out and pop-out to second base to seal the Hornet win.

Marek Mascho started on the mound for Wellsboro and went two and a third innings, allowing five runs (3 earned) on two NPM hits and three walks with two strikeouts, while Pietrzyk went the final four and two-thirds and gave up two runs (1 earned) on four hits and two walks with two K’s.

Morral had three hits in the win .. with a triple and a double .. and added an RBI and two runs scored. Max Mascho had two hits, with a double and three runs scored and Cuneo had a double and an RBI.

Marek Mascho had a hit and scored three runs, Tennis had a hit, an RBI and scored, Baltzley had a hit and an RBI, Owlett had two RBI and Richardson scored a run.

Hermansen had two doubles, an RBI and a run scored to lead Mansfield at the plate while Musser had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Greene had a hit, an RBI and a run scored, Sparks had a hit and scored, Breon had two RBI and a run scored, House had an RBI and Oakes and Deitrick each scored.

Hermansen started on the mound and went two innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Sparks threw the final four innings and gave up four runs (3 earned) on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Wellsboro improves to 6-2 on the season with the win and returns to play on Saturday with a trip to Coudersport. 

The Tigers fall to 3-5 and are at Towanda on Tuesday.
