NTL SOCCER: POIRIER'S 50th, 51st DIFFERENCE IN WIN OVER NORTH PENN-LIBERTY (2021-10-14)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
MANSFIELD — Wellsboro’s Jack Poirier scored his 50th and 51st career goals Thursday against North Penn-Liberty, and the Hornets needed them both to down a resilient Mountie squad 2-1 in NTL boys’ soccer action.

“Jack’s milestone 50th and 51st career goals were the difference for us tonight,” stated Wellsboro Head Coach Todd Fitch. “Credit to North Penn-Liberty for preventing us from settling into the match.”

Poirier found the net for his milestone 50th 22 minutes into the game, off of a Dustin Benedict assist. The junior was quick to credit Benedict and all of his teammates for their help in getting him to this accomplishment.

“It really comes down to my teammates playing me all the balls these last two years.” Poirier stated.

Sam Rudy would assist Poirier on his second goal of the game with nine minutes left in the half. The eventual game-winner came off of Poirier’s right foot like a rocket, as he could relax somewhat and play his game after having the milestone completed.

“I really just wanted to get one in for my 50th and then I settled down a little bit and was able to get a better shot off for my second.” Poirier explained.

Down 2-0 to start the second half, NPL kept attacking and their own 50-goal scorer, Caiden Alexander, scored at the 26-minute mark to close the gap to 2-1.

It would not be enough, as the Hornets’ defense and keeper Aiden Gehman turned the Mounties away for the rest of the game and secured the win.

NPL held a 22-7 advantage in shots, and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Hornets improve to 6-2-2 on the season and are currently sixth in the District IV AA standings, while the Mounties fall to 7-7 and are 10th.

Wellsboro is scheduled to visit Montoursville (7-8) on Tuesday, while NPL will host Towanda (2-13) Wednesday.
