BLOOMSBURG — North Penn-Mansfield was overwhelmed in the trenches as they fell to Milton 35-0 in the opening round of the District IV, Class AAA playoffs Friday.
The Black Panthers out gained them 282 yards to 42 on the ground, and had a 16-3 advantage in first downs, holding NPM to without a first down in the first half. The second seed would score on four of their five first half drives thanks largely to their pound and ground game.
Freshman Chris Doyle had 121 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 15 carries to lead Milton while quarterback Xzavier Minium had 51 yards rushing, and was 6-for-7 for 78 yards throwing the ball. Ashton Canelo chipped in with 87 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Dylan Reif had four catches for 81 yards.
Kohen Lehman led the Panthers with 50 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Carson Dominick was 5-for-9 for 20 yards through the air. Cam Fabian had eight touches on the day - five carries for eight yards and three catches for one yard.
NP-Mansfield went 3-and-out to start the game, with Milton taking over at the 50-yard line. They would need nine plays to hit pay dirt, the key being a 3-yard first down run on 4th-and-3 by Canelo to keep the drive alive. The possession ended with three straight runs by Doyle, with an 11-yard punch the scoring rush. The point after was blocked, making it 6-0 with 5:24 on the clock.
The Panthers went 3-and-out on their next possession, but they held Milton scoreless on their second drive of the game, as well. The Black Panthers had three penalties in a row that backed them up, and they were forced to punt for the only time of the game.
The regular Panthers were forced back on two straight negative players, and punted to end their third possession. The Black Panthers took over at the NPM 47-yard line, and needed just three plays to get into the end zone.
It was Doyle again, running it 32-yard to pay dirt. Minium ran in the 2-point conversion on a fake field goal attempt to make it 14-0 with 7:51 left in the first half.
Milton would get the ball back down inside their own 30-yard line after a Panther punt. This scoring drive would go 71-yards on 9-plays. Canelo had five straight carries for 35 yards, while Doyle had three carries for 25 yards, including the 3-yard scoring run.
The point after was no good, and it was 20-0 with 2:11 left in the half.
On the NPM ensuing drive it looked like they were finally going to pick up a first down, but a fumble was recovered by Milton. With under two minutes to play they needed just three plays to go 44 yards to score.
A 33-yard run by Canelo on the second play from scrimmage set up a 1-yard scoring run by him. Doyle ran in the 2-point conversion and it was 28-0 at the half.
The Black Panthers started with the ball in the second half, but the NPM defense held, forcing them to turn it over on downs at their 6-yard line.
Starting in the shadow of their own goal-line back to back runs by Lehman of 14 and 11 yards got them out to the 31-yard line. However, the drive stalled from there, and they were forced to punt.
Milton took over at their 30-yard line, and on the first play from scrimmage Minium hit Reif in the flat for a 58-yard gain down to the NPM 12.
A 6-yard loss on the next play backed the Black Panthers up, and they soon faced a 4th-and-11. However, Minium scrambled for the first down, down at the 2-yard line. Doyle punched it in on the next play to end the 70-yard, 6-play scoring drive.
Trace Witter hit the kick and it was 35-0 with 1:29 left in the third quarter.
The two teams then traded scoreless drive in the fourth quarter. Milton will host Montoursville in the next round, while NPM ends the season 5-6.
