THE SPORTS REPORT: NOTRE DAME'S MALONEY HEADLINES ALL-REGION GIRLS SOCCER TEAM AS 'PLAYER OF YEAR;' TWO FROM WEST HONORED (2021-12-15)

It was a big year on the soccer field this year.

There were all-state performances, sectional titles and the Notre Dame girls made it to the state semifinals.

After their dominant year Notre Dame took two of the major awards.

Notre Dame goalie Shannon Maloney was The Sports Reports  2021 ‘Player of the Year’ and coach Joe Picco was the ‘Coach of the Year.’

Maloney was a first-team all-state selection and she allowed just three goals all postseason long as the Crusaders won the IAC title, the Section 4 crown and the regional title.

The Crusaders were unbeaten until the state semifinals and that helped Picco be named coach of the year.

Quick and athletic, Troy’s Emma Ward is the ‘Defensive Player of the Year.’ Ward was everywhere for the Trojans defense, anchoring the defense of the NTL Champions.

Elmira’s Emily Hanrahan had 23 goals this year and helped the Express win the Section 4, Class AA title and she is the ‘Offensive Player of the Year.’

Athens freshman Addison Wheeler had a strong debut season with the Wildcats and she is the ‘Newcomer of the Year.”

The first team includes Hanrahan on the first team along with Notre Dame’s Rachael Simpson and the Owego duo of Carmen Jorgensen and Erin McDonald.

The midfield on the first team features Newark Valley’s Emma Miller, Hannah Walker of Athens, Kennedy Westbrook of Waverly and Mia Capilli of Elmira.

Ward anchors the first-team defense with Corning’s Maddy Gill and Gillian Mason and Notre Dame’s Amanda Simpson. Maloney is the first-team goalie.

On the second team is Troy’s Addy Parker, Waverly’s Lea VanAllen, Lauren Gerow of Corning and Ava Mustico of Notre Dame at the forward spots.

The second-team midfield includes Isabella Shiel of Newark Valley, Lily Morton of Owego, Abby Schwab of Horseheads and Leila Vargas of Notre Dame.

On defense is Elmira’s Tierney Krawczyk, Towanda’s Porschia Bennett, Ashlyn Middendorf of Owego and Hayley Beebe of Newark Valley, while Elmira’s Delaney Malone is the second-team goalie.

The third team features the Wyalusing pair of Layla Boots and Olivia Haley at forward along with Athens’ Ally Thoman and Melanie Shumway of NEB.

Troy’s Camille McRoberts, NEB’s Kayleigh Thoman, Wheeler and Towanda’s Anna Dunn are in the midfield and the defense features Athens’ Caydence Macik, Ella Chicone of Notre Dame, Anna-Leona Kaelin of Newark Valley and Olivia Laney of Horseheads. The goalie is Wyalusing’s Pearl O’Connor.

There is also an all-rookie team headed by Wheeler. The rest of the rookie team includes Tioga’s Erica Bradley, Waverly’s Lea Cole and Claire Conch, Owego’s Bella Silvestri, SVEC’s Lua VerasteguiRua, Horseheads’ Katie Miley, Dunn of Towanda, Williamson’s Jade Caldwell and Ella Churchill and Notre Dame’s MK Young, Izzy Griffin and Ellie Green.
