HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: CV's PAINTER SCORES 59 IN INDIAN WIN (2021-12-30)

ADDISON, NY — Cowanesque Valley’s McGwire Painter scored a remarkable 59 points Thursday, leading the Indians to a 94-68 win over Odessa-Montour in the consolation game of the Colwell Street Classic in Addison, NY.

For anyone that has watched a CV basketball game this season, it is readily apparent that while Pennsylvania is not one of the eight States that have a shot clock in high school basketball games, the Indians would be one of the least affected teams around if the 30-second maximum was in play here.

In other words, CV likes to run. They like to score, and they like to do it quickly. Leading the way on the majority of those fast-break opportunities is the uber-athletic Painter.

Coming into the game Thursday, the senior guard was averaging 23.2 points per game over the Indians’ first five contests. *Unfortunately, details of the Indians’ 57-50 loss to Campbell-Savona, including player scoring totals, in the opening game of the Colwell Tourney from Wednesday were not provided*

With his 59-point outburst, Painter’s scoring average rises to a robust 29.2 points per game.

CV actually trailed OM after a quarter of play Thursday, getting outscored 24-15, despite 12 first-quarter points by Painter.

The Indians nearly quadrupled OM’s points in the second, however, as Painter scored 20 points and CV went into the locker rooms with a 46-32 lead.

Painter scored 32 of his points in the first half, including his only three-pointer of the game, making his total even more astounding. He did complete two “old fashioned” three-point plays, and hit 13 of his 15 free throw attempts.

The Indians outscored Odessa Montour 25-14 in the third quarter, with Painter adding a dozen of his points and backcourt-mate Tucker St. Peter scoring seven of his 13 total points in the frame.

OM scored 22 fourth-quarter points, but with the help of 15 from Painter in the quarter, CV held a 23-22 advantage to close out the game.

In addition to Painter’s record-breaking 59-point night and St. Peter’s 13, Gage Tilton added 10 points and Fletcher Good scored six.

Kaden Cole had three points, while Carter Ackley scored two and Julian Francis chipped in with a point.

Cowanesque Valley now stands at 3-4 on the season. They’ll return to action Tuesday when they host fellow NTL small school-foe Wyalusing.
