NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: SECOND-HALF RALLY LIFTS NP-LIBERTY OVER COWANESQUE VALLEY (2022-01-07)

WESTFIELD — North Penn-Liberty fell behind Cowanesque Valley early Friday, but a strong, second-half defensive effort and balanced scoring helped the Lady Mounties come back and pick up a 49-42 win over the Indians in NTL small-school action.

Elizabeth Ritchie had NP-Liberty’s lone three points of the first quarter as CV had five players score a bucket, including a Paisley Nudd three-pointer, to give the Lady Indians an 11-3 lead after one.

The Mounties had a strong second quarter and scored 18 points, as Jaclyn Nelson, Nikki Kiscadden and Tierney Patterson all hit a three and Sidney Landis scored four points, but CV hung tight and Ella Churchill scored eight points to help Cowanesque Valley hold onto a 27-21 lead at the half.

Coming out of the locker rooms, the Mounties turned to their press to produce a number of steals, and points. 

A 9-0 NPL run to start the half included two buckets each by Nelson and Landis and an Ritchie free-throw.

Churchill would stop the run with an old-fashioned three-point play before Richie scored twice inside to pull NPL ahead, 34-30.

A Nudd three-pointer cut the NP-Liberty lead to one as they entered the final frame.

Ashley Woodring hit a free-throw to tie the game at 34, but Liberty scored the next eight points .. on buckets by Nelson, Landis, Emily Kreger and Kiscadden .. to extend the Mountie lead to 42-34.

Another Nudd three cut the lead to six, but the Indians would get no closer, as Patterson scored and Nelson, Kiscadden and Landis hit five free-throws to secure the Mountie win.

Nelson led NPL with 12 points and Landis scored 11 and Ritchie added 10 points.

Kiscadden scored eight, while Patterson had five, Kreger had two and Makenzie Broughton chipped in with one point.

Churchill led CV with 13 points, while Nudd had four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.

Woodring scored five, and Logan Hamilton added four, Kyra Daley had three, Maddie Millard scored two and Lily Vargeson added one point.

The win, NP-Liberty’s third in a row, improves the Mounties to 3-5 on the season, while CV remains winless at 0-7.
