NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY LOSES ON LATE BUCKET BY TOWANDA (2022-01-21)

WESTFIELD — Cowanesque Valley opened up a tie ballgame with a big third quarter, only to see Towanda rally back into the game and hit a last-second shot to hand the Indians a heartbreaking 65-64 loss Friday.

Tucker St. Peter helped CV open up a 19-12 lead with eight first-quarter points, while McGwire Painter and Gage Tilton each added five points. 

Painter and St. Peter each hit a three in the second quarter and Tilton scored six points, but Towanda scored 21 points to earn a 33-33 tie as they headed into the break.

CV hit nine threes in the game .. including five in the first half .. while the Black Knights kept pace with eight threes .. four in the first two quarters.

Painter hit two threes in the third quarter and accounted for 12 of the Indians’ 17 points to help open up a 50-44 lead as they entered the final frame.

Despite seven fourth-quarter points from Tilton and another five from Painter, the Knights rallied and hit three three pointers on their way to a 21-point frame and hit the game-winner with just three seconds left on the clock to steal the win.

Towanda shot only three free throws in the game, hitting all three, while the Indians shot 11-18 from the line.

Painter finished with 25 points for CV, while Tilton scored 21. St. Peter had 11 points, while Fletcher Good had three and Carter Ackley chipped in with two points.

The loss, CV’s third in a row, drops the Indians to 5-9 on the season. They are scheduled to visit Williamson on Tuesday.
