NTL VOLLEYBALL: MOUNTIES AND HORNETS TO MEET FOR 3RD TIME IN DISTRICT SEMIS (2023-10-30)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportATHENS — The 2nd-seeded North Penn-Liberty Lady Mounties and No. 6-seed Wellsboro will meet for the third time in a month Tuesday at Athens High School in the semifinals of the District IV Class 2A volleyball playoffs.
NP-Liberty (14-3) is coming off their seventh-straight NTL-I title and their seventh undefeated league season in a row, while Wellsboro (12-9) went 9-5 in the NTL and 4-4 in the large school division. Two of those divisional losses came against the Mounties.
In Wellsboro on October 3rd the Mounties swept the Hornets 28-26, 25-22 and 25-20.
Saige Lehman (13), Hayley Litzelman (9), Payton Chapel (5) and Ella Swingle (4) combined for 31 kills in the match while Megan Spohn had 25 assists and 17 digs, Rylie Smith had 14 digs and Swingle and Litzelman each had three aces.
Meredith Brownlee led the Hornets with 10 kills while Olivia Chilson and Lexi Urena each added four and Paige Logsdon had three kills and three blocks, Natalie Cleveland had 17 digs and Taylor Main had six assists.
Swingle (14), Lehman (12), Hannah Kendall (6) and Chapel (5) helped NPL record 37 kills while Spohn had 34 assists and Litzelman had three aces.
For Wellsboro, Logsdon and Chilson had two kills each while Logsdon had six blocks and Brownlee had five.
The Mounties open the playoffs off a three match winning streak to end the regular season (Wellsboro, Troy, Towanda) after dropping their third non-league match of the season to Williamsport on October 16th.
Wellsboro beat Loyalsock in the first round of the playoffs after falling in their final two regular season matches .. against Loyalsock and North Penn-Liberty.
The winner of Tuesday’s early semifinal will advance to the finals to face the winner between top-seeded Northeast Bradford and No. 5 seed Troy, who play after the NPL/Wellsboro match.
